When Google Ads make sense for a café
Good reasons to try them:
- You just opened or moved, and people don't know you're there yet.
- You're hard to spot from the street, like a second-floor café or a spot inside an office building.
- You want to fill one specific window, such as weekday afternoons.
- You sell something people search for, like catering, gift cards or bags of beans.
Wait if:
- Your Google Business Profile is incomplete. Fix that first with our Google Maps guide, because it's free.
- Your website is hard to use on a phone, since paid clicks will land there. See what makes a good coffee shop website.
- You can't say why someone should choose you today.
Set up a campaign for one location
- Location. Google Ads lets you target "a radius around a location". Start with the area your regulars actually come from, not the whole city.
- Schedule. Ad scheduling lets you "specify certain hours or days of the week" for your ads. Run them during the hours you want more customers, never while you're closed.
- Budget. Set an average daily budget you're comfortable spending. Google lets you change it at any time.
- Keywords. Start with searches that mean "I want coffee nearby": coffee near me, coffee shop open now, coffee shop [your neighborhood], latte [your city].
- Negative keywords. Exclude searches you don't want to pay for: coffee maker, recipe, wholesale, barista jobs.
- Ad text. Say what's different about your café and give one action: Get directions or Order ahead.
Measure customers, not clicks
A click isn't a customer. Before you start, decide what you'll count:
- Calls and direction requests from your ads
- Online orders that came from an ad link (add
?from=google-adsto the link so you can tell) - Answers to "How did you hear about us?" at the counter during the test
Run one campaign for two to four weeks, then compare with the same weekdays before the test. Keep it only if you see more people in the hours you targeted.

How Nookavi helps
Local ads are part of how we work with cafés: a small radius around your door, a schedule that matches your slow hours, and a tracking code so the monthly report shows customers, not clicks. Our free social media audit tells you whether ads make sense for you yet.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a coffee shop spend on Google Ads?
There's no standard amount. Google Ads runs on an average daily budget that you set and can change at any time, so start with an amount you're comfortable spending for a two- to four-week test and keep going only if you see more customers.
Can I show Google Ads only to people near my café?
Yes. Google Ads location targeting includes a radius around a location, so you can limit your ads to people near your café.
Can I stop my ads when the café is closed?
Yes. Ad scheduling lets you choose the days and hours when your ads can show.
Will Google Ads improve my ranking on Google Maps?
No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads show in separate, labeled spots.
Google Ads or Instagram ads: which is better for a café?
They do different jobs. Google Ads reach people already searching for coffee nearby, while Facebook and Instagram ads reach nearby people who weren't searching yet.
