Guide · E-commerce for coffee shops

How can a coffee shop sell coffee online?

Short answer

Start with what you already sell: online ordering for pickup, digital gift cards and bags of your own beans, using the point-of-sale or website platform you already have. Then put the order link everywhere customers look, starting with your Google Business Profile, your Instagram bio and the top of your website. Add shipping and subscriptions only once pickup orders and gift cards run smoothly, because shipping coffee adds packaging, postage and freshness to manage.

Start with the tools you already pay for

Many café point-of-sale systems, such as Square, Toast and Clover, offer online ordering and digital gift cards. Starting there keeps your menu, prices and sales in one place, with nothing new for your staff to learn.

If you plan to ship bags of coffee, an online store platform such as Shopify, or a WooCommerce site, adds product pages, shipping rates and inventory.

Put the order button where people already look

  • Google Business Profile. Google lets you manage how customers place pickup and delivery orders from your profile, including your own ordering link. See our Google Maps guide.
  • Instagram bio. Put your ordering or gift card link in your bio, and mention it in posts about new drinks.
  • Your website. An Order button on the first screen. See what makes a good coffee shop website.
  • The counter. A QR code for gift cards next to the register, especially in November and December.

Selling beans online: what to check first

  • Each coffee has its own product page: origin, roast level, tasting notes, bag size and price
  • Roast dates are printed on the bags, and you know how soon after roasting you can ship
  • Your bags protect freshness during shipping, and you've tested a delivery to yourself
  • Shipping costs are clear before checkout, with a local pickup option
  • You've checked your state and local rules for selling packaged food, including labels

Once your product pages are live, Google Merchant Center offers free listings for products, so your coffee can show up on Google without paying for ads. Google's guide to SEO for ecommerce sites explains how to structure those pages.

Measure what online sales add

  • Share of orders placed online, by day of the week
  • Gift card sales by month (watch November and December)
  • Repeat online customers
  • Where orders came from: add ?from=instagram or ?from=google to the links you share

Frequently asked questions

What's the easiest way for a coffee shop to start selling online?

Digital gift cards and order-ahead pickup. Both usually run through the point-of-sale system you already use, and neither involves shipping.

Do I need a website to sell coffee online?

Not at first. Many ordering tools give you a hosted ordering page you can link from Google and Instagram. A website helps once you sell beans or merch, because each product gets its own page that search engines can find.

Can my coffee bags show up on Google for free?

They can. Google Merchant Center offers free listings for products, so your products can be eligible to appear on Google without paying for ads.

Should a café use delivery apps?

They can bring orders from people who wouldn't come in, but they charge fees and you don't own the relationship with the customer. Some cafés use them for reach and steer regulars to their own order-ahead page.

Can I ship coffee beans from my café?

Usually, yes, but rules for packaged food vary by state and city. Check labeling and permit requirements locally before you start shipping.
